WASHINGTON — Through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act, $7.8 million in federal COVID-19 funds were made available to regional airports, including $69,000 for the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport.
The funding is part of nearly $10 billion available from the CARES Act to eligible U.S. airports to help them respond to coronavirus impacts and for ongoing airport operations such as continued employment.
“We need to be sure that our airports continue to be able to provide a safe environment for their employees and passengers,” U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Howland said in a news release. “This funding will ensure that our airports have the resources they need to continue serving our community after we get through this crisis.”
In addition, funds can be used for new airport development if certain requirements are met such as safety and security standards, prevailing wage provisions, Buy American, Veterans’ Preference and Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Program requirements.
The other regional airports receiving funding include:

- Akron Canton Regional Airport, $7,609,950
- Portage County Airport, $30,000
- Kent State University Airport, $30,000
